weekend wrap-up on memphis and beyond

null

Memphis: perhaps it was once the heart and soul of rock 'n roll, but it seems to have fallen to the wayside, probably around the time Elvis passed on the crapper. I put over 24 hours of serious car time in this weekend for a one day visit. Obviously I'm a masochist, who would do such a thing, really. After traveling through countless corn fields and narrowly avoiding several drunken trucker side swipe attempts I had made it to the Roachway... I mean Rodeway Hotel. It was a classic dump of a motel, you know, the kind that shady drug deals happen at, where you can still make out the slight glimmer of a faded body-outline chalk drawing... but the real kicker - the shower water was freezing, jeeze. After resting up I visited the Memphis Flea Market, the second disappointment of the trip. Seriously, unless you're looking to score loads of half-priced possibly used make-up and generic straw hats, don't waste your time. The gem of Memphis, in my opinion, lies well into the ghetto... actually there are two gems. For some reason, every thrift and antique store in town decided to setup shop within two blocks from each other. It's like an epicenter of thrifty-ness. After hours of scores, such as high-top Nike's, girlscout short shorts and a sweet alarm clock, I was beat. Which leads me to the second gem of the day, DeJaVu, a tiny soul and creole restaurant with a part of the menu being totally vegan! This place was so much better than the conclusion I had initially drawn from it's "charming" location and in general dilapidated appearance. The food was good, the owner and waitress were very sweet, it was awesome. This is getting to be winded, so let me sum up the rest in list form. The highlights: -saw the gories at the hi-tone, sweated my ass off -saw jay reatard hanging out at the hi-tone getting wasted and getting ladies -went to the cooper-young area, checked out a book and record store, drank lots of coffee That was my weekend adventure. Up soon will be a post where I talk about getting a new table runner or some shit like that, because I feel that is about how interesting I am.
